INSTITUTE OF PHILOSOPHICAL PRACTICES (France)

8th International Summer Seminar
"Practicing Philosophy"
La Chapelle St André - Burgundy, France
August 5th - 11th 2013

Every summer, in the little village of La Chapelle St André (Burgundy - France), gather about 30-40 persons involved in philosophical practice (students, teachers, professors, counselors, trainers) in order to reflect on their work and improve professionally. For seven days, in English, these philosophy practitioners coming from the five continents will participate to different workshops, lead workshops, analyze and evaluate them, theorize about the different issues involved.

In this context, philosophy is not any more an academic activity centered on the history of ideas, and one does not come simply to narrate what he does in his home country, but get acquainted with the many ways of philosophizing, as an activity constitutive of the mind and the self. Philosophy with children, philosophical consultation, philosophy workshops, Socratic dialogue, etc., one is introduced to the many forms and variants of such an endeavor. It is not so much knowledge that is at stake here, but acquiring and developing skills. How to conceptualize, how to problematize, how to deepen understanding of given ideas, and especially how to create a situation where this activity can be induced, is the main focus of the work.

Of course, Socratic maieutic is a key methodological point, but as well dialectics, analytics, community of enquiry, constitute as many entries and matrices to define the work. If they wish so, participants can facilitate a workshop, a situation which provides an occasion for a practitioner to show how he works and get some critical feed-back on his work and his methodology, so one becomes more conscious of his own options and activity. Since the atmosphere of this seminar is open, inclined to both rigor and diversity, it creates a context where one can really express his view instead of hiding behind the usual pseudo-consensus where "everything is fine and we are all great". In this sense, the idea is to recreate the context of antique philosophical schools, or the gymnasium as described by Plato, where one could challenge other's ideas and oneself be challenged. In the peaceful atmosphere of a small French village, accompanied with good food and good wine, walks in the beautiful surrounding woods and visit to the medieval site of Vezelay, one can truly devote oneself to philosophical encounters and reflection.

All practitioners interested in presenting their work and holding a workshop during this event are invited to send their proposal. The purpose of this seminar is to exchange, discover, experiment and develop practices.

This seminar does not require previous philosophical training. It can be an initiation to philosophical practice, or a deepening of the activity. Participants come from different parts of the world, and join for professional or personal reasons, in order to work on a practice that is applicable to many contexts: teaching children or adults, management, individual consultation, N. G. O. activities...
The duration will be one whole week, from August 5h - 11th, and the cost will be 600 Euros, including the workshops, food and accommodation in a private room. For people who are on a tight budget, this can be reduced to 350 Euros if you accept "camping style" accommodation. Our Institute can accept some people free of charge who have financial difficulties, but are highly motivated.

You can read theoretical texts and watch videos of the practice on the following websites - English section:

Men temaet for symposiumet er interessant nok: The Philosophical Novel for Children: History, Theory and Prospects. Maughn skriver:

Recent years have seen the passing of the three great pioneers in the Philosophy for Children (P4C) movement: Matthew Lipman (2010), Ann Margaret Sharp (2010), and Gareth Mathews (2011). In appraising their monumental work and legacy, scholars have tended to focus solely on the impact Lipman, Sharp, and Matthews have had on educational philosophy and theory. In addition to these areas of scholarly contribution, however, all three devoted considerable effort to the construction and reconstruction of the philosophical curriculum. In this regard, Matthews experimented with short philosophical stories and offered interpretations of countless works by other authors in the light of his view that good literature provides children with the material for forming philosophical questions and dialogue, while Lipman and Sharp both pioneered the intentional use of the philosophical novel as a way of both initiating and teaching children to do philosophy in classroom settings. But important questions remain about the philosophical novel for children, not only with regard to its function as the curricular centerpiece of P4C, but about the theory and practice of narrative in both education and philosophy, the location of the novel within the history of philosophy, and the future of the philosophical novel and curriculum in pre-college philosophy.

Lipman saw his own philosophical novels for children as “models of doing philosophy that are clear, practical, and specific.” In this sense, teaching philosophy requires more than exposing students to its logical form—that is, it’s most distinctive and essential qualities—but also to its function and the circumstances of its emergence and practice. Thus philosophical novels are a way of “dramatizing philosophy” that allow students to both recognize and assimilate its praxis. This Lipmanian understanding of the philosophical role and its role in education has been celebrated and championed by some scholars (eg., De Marzio, Kennedy, et al), while criticized and tempered by others (eg., Murris, Hand, et al). Given the diversity of current perspectives on the philosophical novel, the time is ripe for furthering the conversation on the history, theory, and prospect of this highly significant and contested area of philosophical and educational inquiry.

Se invitasjon under.

INSTITUTE OF PHILOSOPHICAL PRACTICES (France)
International Winter Seminar 2013

"Practicing Philosophy"

Argenteuil - France

February 18th - 23rd, 2013

Last summer, after increasing the attendance of our seminar to the maximum number allowed by the local facilities, about forty persons, we had the regrettable obligation to refuse quite a few later applications for attendance. This meant already that we had to hold numerous workshops in two different halls, in order to give everyone a chance to show his work and not crowd the halls too much.

Because of this, and because we do not wish to go beyond this size of attendance, we have decided to hold a winter seminar, not in La Chapelle St André (Burgundy) where the season creates harsh living conditions, but in Argenteuil, at the seat of the I.P.P., in the suburbs of Paris. Of course, persons that were denied attendance at the summer seminar will have a priority. Again for practical reasons, we do not wish to receive too many persons, in order for the seminar to remain a seminar and not become a conference.

So we intend to receive maximum 20 persons, interested or involved in philosophical practice: students, teachers, professors, counselors, trainers, etc. Like in the summer seminar, the purpose will be for these participants to reflect on their work and improve professionally. For seven days, in English, these practitioners coming from very diverse countries will participate to different workshops, lead workshops, analyze and evaluate them, theorize about the different issues involved.

In this context, philosophy is not an academic activity centered on the history of ideas, and one does not come simply to narrate what he does in his home country, but get acquainted with the many ways of philosophizing, as an activity constitutive of the mind and the self. Philosophy with children, philosophical consultation, philosophy workshops, Socratic dialogue, etc., one is introduced to the many forms and variants of such an endeavor. It is not so much knowledge that is at stake here, but acquiring and developing skills. How to conceptualize, how to problematize, how to deepen understanding of given ideas, and especially how to create a situation where this activity can be induced, are the main focus of the work.

Of course, Socratic maieutic is a key methodological point, but as well dialectics, analytics, community of enquiry, constitute as many entries and matrices to define the work. If they wish so, participants can facilitate a workshop, a situation that provides an occasion for a practitioner to show how he works and get some critical feed-back on his work and his methodology, so one becomes more conscious of his own options and activity.

All practitioners interested in presenting their work and holding a workshop during this event are invited to send in their proposal. The purpose of this seminar is to exchange, discover, experiment and develop practices.
ACPC Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children organizes the International Conference

Cognition - Emotion - Communication: Scope and Limits

October 18 - 21, 2012 in Graz/Austria

This year’s conference faces special challenges. It is about the exploration, the scope and limits, the differences, correlations and in particular the mutual dependencies of cognition – emotion – communication.

In practice, the question of the relationship between these three key parameters in education and learning processes has long been a recurring theme. In theory, the discussions have become more lively, more complex and extensive. One can observe that various scientific disciplines including philosophy, psychology, sociology, linguistics, neuroscience and education - have been struggling with the complexity and dynamics of cognition – emotion - communication.

What is the cognitive content of emotions? Are emotions states, convictions or judgments? Are emotions, as traditionally believed, "opponents of reason", or do they possibly play an important role with regard to rational decisions? What role does the promotion of the "socio-organic whole" of cognition - emotion - communication play for the free development of the child?

An important aim of this conference is to identify the diversity, complexity and dynamics in the rapidly changing world of the present. This may help to establish the forms of life and ideas of children.

Children in primary school have already developed a network of hypotheses and ideas in order to explain the world to themselves.
This is a challenge for philosophy: how can it promote the cognitive and emotional development of children, their language skills, and their curiosity as well as their ability to inquire and think autonomously?

In last thirty years, Philosophy for Children has developed the major foundations for the philosophical and pedagogical process beginning in early childhood. The first major steps for children’s independent development of personality, as well as their problem-solving ability, self-criticism, conflict resolution skills and empathy, are supported in order to develop a differentiated perception.

Critical and reflective thinking and creative problem-solving are essential for all processes and applications concerning knowledge in everyday life, for art, science, technology and society. It is therefore essential to promote these key competencies early on and to enhance them through lifelong learning. The involvement of the relationships between cognition - emotion – communication is both appropriate and essential for the initiation of effective and important learning processes as well as the basis for teaching in schools. Doing philosophy involves critical, creative and caring thinking within a "community of inquiry”. This plays a central role in dealing with problems of our time. This applies especially when we consider the problems in the globalized world, when we take into account cultural diversity and validity claims of different cultures.

The ability of children and young people to participate in intercultural dialogue is basic for orientation in a globalized world. The aim of the conference is to foster the intercultural and interdisciplinary dialogue and the exchange between the different approaches and theories in the context of the contemporary world.

Doing philosophy with children and adolescents provides skills and competencies that are essential for our society. The conference will focus on issues that concern the juncture of philosophical thinking, professional scientific research, and current social problems.
The aim is to explain the basics of cognitive and emotional processes that contribute to a deeper understanding of society and to develop innovative approaches for its sustainability. The conference has a particularly important objective; to reveal insights which are scientifically profound and that can be transferred to a social and communicative level in practice.

This conference covers the following subjects:

Cognition – Emotion – Communication: Scope and Limits

Interdependence between Cognition – Emotion – Communication

Community of Inquiry

Tom Wartenberg: Philosophy as a Tool for Ameliorating Educational Disadvantage
My presentation focuses upon my experience working in a primary (elementary) school in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. My university students teach a seven week “Introduction to Philosophy Course” to children to seven and eight year old students all of whom are Hispanic and African American and from impoverished backgrounds. After explaining my approach to teaching philosophy, one that is based upon using children’s picture books as prompts for philosophical discussions, I present a range of benefits that accrue to the children from their engagement with philosophy. The presentation will include some video clips.

Ron Ritchhart: Demystifying Thinking: Helping All Students Learn How to Learn
Educational disadvantage impacts an individual’s engagement in school and general readiness to learn, reducing a student’s development of self-efficacy toward learning and future aspirations associated with education. By demystifying the thinking process, drawing on students’ natural inclination toward sense making, and offering providing models of intellectual engagement, teachers can help all students learn how to learn. A classroom focus on ideas and thinking, rather than achievement of the quick right answer, changes the dynamics of the classroom so as to create a community of inquiry and truly thoughtful classroom space. Drawing on the past twelve years of research into making thinking visible and creating classroom cultures of thinking, Ron Ritchhart will share strategies that engage learners in active meaning making while scaffolding the thinking process and making it more visible to all.

Lynne Hinton: The Thoughtful School
How does the school itself contribute to or perpetuate the notion of educational disadvantage? This presentation suggests that the most important job of schools is to teach children to think well, thereby enabling them to make good judgements and question issues that relate to their lives and the lives of others. How this was achieved at one school through engagement in philosophy over a period of 14 years, is described. Current work being undertaken at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane is also outlined.

Phil Cam: Educational Disadvantage and the Community of Inquiry
In dealing with educational disadvantage, teachers need to try to bridge the gap between the educationally disadvantaged student’s out-of-school life-world and the one they encounter at school. This talk looks at the ways in which the classroom Community of Inquiry can assist in this process. After suggesting that there are more and less productive ways for teachers to think about educational disadvantage and its connection to the Community of Inquiry, we will examine evidence for thinking that the Community of Inquiry can help us to deal with educational disadvantage. Following this, we will explore three prominent features of the Community of Inquiry that also give us reason to believe that it can be effective in dealing with educational disadvantage. These are its capacity to stimulate student engagement, its emphasis on learning to think for yourself, and its ability to generate a sense of belonging.

7th International Summer Seminar
"Practicing Philosophy"
La Chapelle St André - Burgundy, France
August 6th - 12th 2012

In this sense, the idea is to recreate the context of antique philosophical schools, or the gymnasium as described by Plato, where one could challenge other's ideas and himself be challenged. In the peaceful atmosphere of a small French village, accompanied with good food and good wine, walks in the beautiful surrounding woods and visit to the medieval site of Vezelay, one can truly devote himself to philosophical encounters and reflection.

The duration will be one whole week, from August 6th - 12th, and the cost will be 600 Euros, including the workshops, food and accommodation in a private room. For people who are on a tight budget, this can be reduced to 350 Euros if you accept "camping style" accommodation. Our Institute can accept some people free of charge who have financial difficulties, but are highly motivated.

You can read theoretical texts and watch videos of the practice on the following websites - English section:

Kursbeskrivelse

Filosofisk undring faller ofte lettere for barn enn for voksne.

Sommerskole P4C

Høyskolen i Oslo (som på engelsk nå heter Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences) inviterer også iår til internasjonale sommerskoler på engelsk. Iår avholdes de fra 2. til 20. juli 2012. Et av temaene er Philosophy in Preschool and School. Kurset presenteres slik:

Philosophy in Preschool and School , is a way to work with questions and problems in all school subjects and in pre-school activity. Doing philosophy helps to develop a critical mind, oral skills and democratic ability.

For many people philosophy seems unknown and foreign. It shouldn’t. All human beings think and find answers to important and difficult questions which crop up every day. Philosophy is about making this thinking and answering more systematic. When we practise philosophy we try to find out something true, but we do it without going out and looking that the world or looking things up in books. Instead we look into ourselves and talk to each other. We find answers by thinking, not by weighing, measuring or gathering.

Under the auspices of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO the ACPC Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children organizes the

International Conference "Childhood and Democracy" - New Philosophical Challenges

Ann Margaret Sharp und Matthew Lipman - In Memoriam

October 20 - 23, 2011 in Graz/Austria

We live in an era where changes are constantly taking place at an accelerated pace and globalisation is in full flow. Our world has become smaller and intercultural contact is omnipresent. There is no doubt that the so-called modern societies are currently undergoing a process of enormous upheaval. This is reflected in particular in both social and ethical points of view.

This leads to numerous questions, such as those for the possibilities of understanding, judging and criticizing one’s own and other cultures, but also those for living conditions, equity, political socialization and the validity of beliefs, standards and practices.

Democracy is about shaping the conditions of life in an active way, taking into account human rights, social justice and, last but not least, the democratisation of all aspects of life. A precondition of democracy as a way of living is to be able to act and participate in a democratic way.

At which stage of childhood should ethical systems with democratic principles be applied, in order to enhance the autonomous development of children within the framework of our ‘knowledge’ society?

Over the last few decades, Philosophy for Children has laid significant foundations for instigating the philosophical-educational process at a very early age. As part of this process, children are encouraged to become independent personalities as well as to be able to solve problems and be self-critical, not to mention being able to deal with conflicts and develop empathy and a differentiated perception.

In this context, philosophy is faced with a number of global challenges. This year’s conference focuses on two main issues:

When should democratic principles be applied to foster the autonomous development of children in an optimal way? How do children and young people learn to live in a democracy?

Which models can be selected in order to develop a certain level of independence in childhood by combining ethical systems with fundamental democratic concepts? How can we help to promote the ability to reflect, increase the ability to rationalise and improve both the individual and collective level of independence, in combination with democracy?

This conference will contribute to a repositioning and improvement in the quality of the current curricular models. Innovative philosophical approaches to childhood are included and investigated. Internationally renowned experts from various disciplines and fields will present an overview of the currents state of research regarding the subject of this year’s conference. The aim of the conference is to motivate and encourage exciting debates on the fundamental principles based on the various project presentations. It also aims to encourage scientific discussion and personal exchange.

Approximately 200 participants from 18 countries, including 24 speakers, will be provided with an excellent programme that will make this conference both fascinating and eventful.

The themes of the conference cover the following fields:

Understanding and comprehension of democracy

Intercultural dialogue

New Media – new forms of democracy

Global awareness

Community of Inquiry

Philosophy of Human Rights

Development of democratic teaching

Jo Bowers, Senior Lecturer in Primary Language at UWIC

Jo Bowers is a Senior Lecturer in Primary Language at UWIC. She has been a Primary teacher for twenty years and lectured in Primary Language at UWIC for the last eight years. Jo was introduced to Philosophy for Children (P4C) seventeen years ago when she attended a Level 1 training course as a Primary school teacher. She introduced it into her classroom and seeing the benefits to children’s thinking and learning, has used it in her classroom ever since. As an experienced primary teacher and lecturer in Education, Jo has led training over the last four years across all key stages to teachers, lecturers and students and delivered workshops at conferences to raise awareness to practitioners of how beneficial P4C is to develop thinking skills across the curriculum. Jo has been delivering Level 1 training since 2009 both at UWIC and as whole school training. She has also recently set up local network groups with P4C colleagues for Primary school teachers and Headteachers to meet, discuss and share ideas about P4C practice and for teachers new to P4C.

Susan Davis, Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies

Susan Davis joined UWIC as a Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Studies in September 2004. Previously she taught in the field of Early Years Education in Nursery and Reception, before becoming a tutor on the CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education at Coleg Gwent Ebbw Vale. She also taught with the Open University on their Early Childhood Studies Degree programmes. She is currently the Programme Director for the Foundation Degree in Learning Support and teaches Early Childhood Studies on a number of programmes within the Cardiff School of Education.

Guest Speakers

Dr Sue Lyle, Educational Consultant

Dr Sue Lyle has been a class teacher, teacher advisor and teacher educator for 35 years. She recently retired as Head of Continuing Professional Development at Swansea Metropolitan University. She continues to work part-time with PhD and MA students and has established her own educational consultancy business. Her research interests have focused on how children make meaning through talk, in particular the role of imagination and role-play in children’s learning and the impact of professional development on teachers. She works closely with LEAs to provide professional development for teachers and strongly believes in Action Research as the key tool for promoting critical reflection and change. As a SAPERE trainer she led a large professional development project to train over 1800 teachers in South Wales in Philosophy for Children for the 3-19 age range. Her current research is concerned with investigating the impact of P4C on teacher attitudes towards young children.

The Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children organizes the International Conference of Philosophy with Children:

THINKING THE FUTURE
PHILOSOPHY – SUSTAINABILITY – GLOBAL CONSCIOUSNESS

October 14-17, 2010
Graz/Austria

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children the central theme of this year’s conference will be ‘Thinking the Future. Philosophy – Sustainability – Global Consciousness’.

In view of the rapid change of society, the global ecological crises, and the fundamental categorical shifts in relationships between mankind and nature it is necessary to deal with the philosophical prerequisites, questions about causes and consequences of the changes - as well as with preventive methods and accompanying measures - and their chances and risks.

Especially with regard to the risks, insecurities and incertitudes we are exposed to, questions like the following come up:

What sort of world do we want to live in? Which incertitudes in the development of our society and of our environment are we confronted with? Which responsibility do we have for future generations? In which way can philosophy support society in perceiving, changing and dealing with the current problems? How can the philosophical dialogue contribute to the research in sustainability?

The aim of the conference is the exchange between the various philosophical approaches and theories in the context of today's world as well as the inclusion of current research results from diverse scientific fields in order to make explicit further bases of knowledge for educational concepts on the one hand as well as for initiatives on educational policy on the other hand.

Knowledge about nature and its dynamics as well as reflection about social and ethical aspects of ecological problems are to be merged in the context of philosophy for children.

In addition to lectures from internationally renowned experts on prevailing and important themes, the conference will give an overview of the current state in research, fascinating debates on basic principles and project presentations. The aim of the conference is to encourage scientific dispute and personal exchange. The program will offer an eventful symposium to the approximately 200 participants from 18 countries, including 24 speakers.

The themes of the conference cover the following fields:

Intergenerational justice

Distributive justice

The notion of democracy

Culture of responsibility – responsibility for future generations

Community of Inquiry

Education towards sustainable development

Critical, creative and caring thinking

Relationship mankind – nature

Lifelong learning

Change of the relationship between cooperation and competition

Oscar Brenifier Annual Summer seminar

INSTITUTE OF PHILOSOPHICAL PRACTICES

Fifth Annual Summer seminar: The art of questioning

July 12th-18th 2010

Every year in July, in the little village of La Chapelle St André (Burgundy - France), gather about 20-30 persons involved in philosophical practice (students, teachers, professors, counselors, trainers) in order to reflect on their work and improve professionally. For seven days, in English, these philosophy practitioners coming from the five continents will participate to different workshops, run workshops, analyze and evaluate them, theorize about the different issues involved.

In this context, philosophy is not any more an academic activity centered on the history of ideas, and one does not come simply to narrate what he does in his home country, but get acquainted with the many ways that philosophizing is an activity constitutive of the mind and the self.

Of course, Socratic maïeutics is a key methodological point, but as well dialectics, analytics, community of enquiry, constitute as many entries and matrices to define the work. If they wish so, participants can facilitate a workshop, a situation which provides an occasion for a practitioner to show how he works and get some critical feed-back on his work and his methodology, so one becomes more conscious of his own options and activity. Since the atmosphere of this seminar is open, inclined to both rigor and openness, it creates a context where one can really express his view instead of hiding behind the usual pseudo-consensus where "everything is fine and we are all great".

The duration will be one whole week, from July 12th to 18th, and the cost will be 500 EUR, including the workshops, food and accommodation in a private room. For people who are on a tight budget, this can be reduced to 300 EUR if you accept "camping style" accommodation. Our Institute can accept some people free of charge who have financial difficulties, but are highly motivated.

This seminar does not require previous philosophical training. It can be an initiation to philosophical questioning, or a deepening of the practice. Participants come from different parts of the world, and come for professional or personal reasons, to work on a practice that is applicable to many contexts: teaching, management, N. G. O. activities...

IAPC (Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children) pleier å arrangere to årvisse seminarer.

New Jersey-traktene utenfor New York, USA.

Aktiviteter i Frankrike

INTERNASJONALT SOMMERSEMINAR: FILOSOFISKE PRAKSISER

Her følger invitasjonen på engelsk:

Call for contributions

The Institute of Philosophical Practice is organizing its 5th summer seminar in English on philosophical practice. It will take place in La Chapelle St André, a small village in Burgundy, 250 km from Paris. Philosophy professors or practicing philosophers who wish to present their methodology during the seminar are invited to forward by electronic mail their proposal, before April 30th, 2010 at the following address: alcofrib [at] club-internet.fr The proposal should take the form of a workshop, not a lecture. They can deal with the various aspects of philosophical practice: philosophy with children, philosophical consultation or counseling, philosophy in business, philosophy teaching, etc.

Workshop

A philosophical workshop is a practice where one engages himself to produce and understand ideas, deepening them through argumentation, analysis and interpretation, problematizing them through questions and objections, clarifying them through the identification and utilization of concepts. It is not an exchange of opinions, a lecture or a verification of acquired knowledge, but the common elaboration of a thinking process, by examining its flaws and limitations, working it through in order to develop it in a conscious and reflected manner.

We all have opinions, erudite or banal, that we enjoy repeating, without realizing that we have become their captive. To philosophize is to make a stop on those ideas, in order to examine them in a critical way. A workshop has a structure and functioning rules, it imposes constraints in order to ensure that one confronts rigorously the ideas he encounters.

GRATIS FILOSOFISKE KONSULTASJONER GJENNOM SKYPE

(Kateket i Oslo)

(Kateket i Tunsberg)

Allsidig metode

Empowerment through Philosophy for Children

The Spanish Centre of Philosophy for Children announces that between 11 and 14 March 2010 a Conference will be hold in the University de Alcalá de Henares (Madrid): XXII Ibero-American Seminar of Philosophy for Children and Sophia Network 2010 Meeting.

The subject that will be dealt is:

EMPOWERMENT THROUGH PHILOSOPHY FOR CHILDREN

emphasizing the philosophical dialogue, as a tool to fight against social exclusion, and supporting democracy in formal, informal and non-formal education contexts.

This subject, in short, is aimed at analyzing the philosophical contribution and specially the ones of the Philosophy for Children, it can be a useful tool to promote the formation of critical, committed and responsible people and a democratic and supportive society as well.

With this chosen title, therefore, we try to invite you to show your works, projects, researches, workshops and etc. Not only do we invite those who use this programme in schools and in the formal educational scopes, but, specially, those colleges who put this programme into practice out of school classrooms and in other different contexts in which fighting against the social exclusion is the main priority.

The Conference will consist of workshops and theoretical papers as well, explaining the base of the programme, researches and experiences related to the subject. Likewise, will be everyday a public access lecture. Workshops will last a little more than an hour, whereas the papers will consist of a 15 minutes speech by the lecturer and 15 minutes for questions by participants.

Therefore, we invite and encourage everybody related to this topic to participate in the Conference in order to share our knowledge about the educational system we work with, because we are all involved in the Philosophy for Children. I am sure that our participation will be a good opportunity to promote the Philosophy for Children Programme and its approach.

[...] if you are interested in participating either in a workshop or in a paper, please write to fgam0044 at ficus.pntic.mec.es applying for the registration form which will be provided together with the adequate regulations aimed at facilitating the presentation of your proposal, which should be sent before 15 November.

On the second week November approximately, further information about the Conference organization as accommodation, fees and registration period will be provided to participants.

Under the auspices of the Austrian Commission for UNESCO the
ACPC Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children organizes the international conference

CREATIVITY - THINKING - PHILOSOPHY

October 15-18, 2009 in Graz/Austria

Creativity and thinking are the two main foci of this international conference of Philosophy with Children. Creative, critical, social and caring thinking are fundamental skills which are critical both for our cognitive and personal development, and for the well-being of every human being.

It is important to get involved in philosophical inquiry in every aspect of life; to think in a reflective way and to practise creative problem-solving. Philosophical inquiry enriches our speaking and acting, the implementation of knowledge in our everyday life, our art, science, technical science and society. Because it is so basic to our development, it is necessary to foster these skills early on with small children and to then deepen them through lifelong learning.

Creativity is an anthropologically basic character trait of human beings and essential for the self-reformation of society, including the reformation of science and culture. The relation of creativity and thinking means openness as well as critical reflection.

How can we foster creativity and self-reflective thinking in schools? Which approaches, methodologies, strategies, and possibilities do we see offered through our educational system? How do we understand the relation between individual and collective creativity? What contribution can philosophy make for the future of a knowledge-based society?

The Austrian Centre of Philosophy with Children organise a yearly conference -- a conference that has already become a tradition – with the aim of exchanging philosophical ideas and theories grounded in interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives with reference to new research projects and practical approaches. This year's conference will examine the role of creativity and thinking in children's development of life skills.

The congress offers papers and reports from international experts, an overview about the current state in research, exciting debates and a wide range of project presentations. It provides an important intercultural and interdisciplinary forum were academic discussions and exchanges of personal experiences can take place. The program offers the approximately 200 participants from 18 countries, among them 24 speakers, an eventful conference.

The themes of the conference cover the following fields:

Creativity and thinking

Virtual worlds – creativity and imagination

Lifelong learning

Citizenship and democracy

Transculturality and transdisciplinarity

Philosophy and ethics in school

Culture, integration and education

Pluralistic dimensions of philosophy with children
