The Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children organizes the International Conference of Philosophy with Children:

THINKING THE FUTURE
PHILOSOPHY – SUSTAINABILITY – GLOBAL CONSCIOUSNESS

October 14-17, 2010
Graz/Austria

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Austrian Center of Philosophy with Children the central theme of this year’s conference will be ‘Thinking the Future. Philosophy – Sustainability – Global Consciousness’.

In view of the rapid change of society, the global ecological crises, and the fundamental categorical shifts in relationships between mankind and nature it is necessary to deal with the philosophical prerequisites, questions about causes and consequences of the changes - as well as with preventive methods and accompanying measures - and their chances and risks.

Especially with regard to the risks, insecurities and incertitudes we are exposed to, questions like the following come up:

What sort of world do we want to live in? Which incertitudes in the development of our society and of our environment are we confronted with? Which responsibility do we have for future generations? In which way can philosophy support society in perceiving, changing and dealing with the current problems? How can the philosophical dialogue contribute to the research in sustainability?

The aim of the conference is the exchange between the various philosophical approaches and theories in the context of today's world as well as the inclusion of current research results from diverse scientific fields in order to make explicit further bases of knowledge for educational concepts on the one hand as well as for initiatives on educational policy on the other hand.

Knowledge about nature and its dynamics as well as reflection about social and ethical aspects of ecological problems are to be merged in the context of philosophy for children.

In addition to lectures from internationally renowned experts on prevailing and important themes, the conference will give an overview of the current state in research, fascinating debates on basic principles and project presentations. The aim of the conference is to encourage scientific dispute and personal exchange. The program will offer an eventful symposium to the approximately 200 participants from 18 countries, including 24 speakers.

The themes of the conference cover the following fields:

  • Intergenerational justice
  • Distributive justice
  • The notion of democracy
  • Culture of responsibility – responsibility for future generations
  • Community of Inquiry
  • Education towards sustainable development
  • Critical, creative and caring thinking
  • Relationship mankind – nature
  • Lifelong learning
  • Change of the relationship between cooperation and competition
