UNESCO World Philosophy Day: Essay Event for the Baltic Region schools

The AIIPh Baltic Sea Net organizes with the Finnish UNESCO Associated School Project -net, The Finnish Association for Teachers of Philosophy and Philosophy of Life and Societas Philosophica Fennica, a philosophical essay event for secondary school students in countries around the Baltic Sea.

The schools that wish to participate in the essay event should order the topics of the essay and further information from the National Board of Education in Finland by Friday 3th November either by e-mail or by mail. The addresses are:

tuulia.ahola-luttila@oph.fi

or snail mail:

Opetushallitus UNESCO ASP/ Tuulia Ahola-Luttila
PL 380
FIN-00530 Helsinki
FINLAND

From those who have already ordered the topics, is no application needed. The schools will receive the topics in the 6th of November. In Finland the essay event also functions as a selection for the Philosophy Olympics in 2007.

The papers should be prompt and concise, approximately one or two pages long, and they should be written in English or in German or French (however, not in the student’s own mother tongue). The criteria of evaluation are: relevance to the topic, philosophical understanding of the topic, persuasive power of argumentation, coherence, and originality. The participating schools should select two papers and send them by e-mail to the address above or by fax to +358 9 7747 7823. The deadline for the papers is Wednesday 8th the November 2006.

Philosophically the most illuminating papers will be awarded with philosophy-related material. The names of the awarded will be published on internet in the following addresses: www.unescokoulu.fi and www.feto.fi. Therefore we are also asking the participants for permission to publish their essay.
